What to know

Build safe habits before an emergency

Review these steps with everyone in the household and keep the full PERC guidance available.

01

Recognize possible warning signs

A propane odor, a propane-gas detector alarm, hissing near a gas component, or unexplained gas usage can signal a possible leak. Treat any suspected leak as an emergency even if you cannot smell propane.

02

Never troubleshoot a suspected leak yourself

Do not try to light a pilot, operate an appliance, or search the building for the source. Any propane-system service, appliance connection, or open gas line should be handled by a qualified professional.

03

If the tank runs out or gas is shut off

Do not turn the gas back on at the tank yourself. A qualified professional must check the system for leaks and ensure pilot lights are safely relit before the system returns to service.

04

Reduce carbon-monoxide risk

Install listed carbon-monoxide detectors as directed by their manufacturer. Arrange qualified appliance maintenance, keep chimneys and appliance air-intake and exhaust vents clear, and never use an oven, range, outdoor grill, or unapproved portable heater to heat an indoor space.

05

If carbon monoxide is suspected

Leave the building immediately, call 911 or the fire department from a safe location, and remain away until an emergency responder or qualified professional says it is safe to return.

06

Keep the full safety guide available

Review the complete PERC materials with every member of the household and follow all manufacturer instructions for tanks, detectors, and appliances.
